As development accelerates across biodiversity-rich regions, maintaining connected landscapes has become an increasingly urgent challenge.

In Florida, one of the fastest-growing states in the United States, this tension is especially pronounced. The Florida Ecological Connectivity Planning Viewer (EcoCon) offers a practical, science-based solution, equipping planners, conservationists, and policymakers with the tools needed to align growth with ecological connectivity.

Developed through a partnership between the University of Florida Center for Landscape Conservation Planning and the GeoPlan Center, EcoCon integrates diverse ecological datasets into a unified planning framework. By combining information on wildlife corridors, land use, development pressure, and conservation priorities, the EcoCon provides a comprehensive view of where protection and strategic planning are most critical.

Accessible through an interactive, web-based platform, the EcoCon enables users to explore and filter datasets, input and overlay their own data, run basic spatial analyses, and generate customized map outputs. These capabilities allow users to move beyond abstract goals and instead identify areas where conservation investments or policy decisions will have the greatest impact.

For a rapidly growing state like Florida, this approach is critical. The EcoCon highlights both threats and vulnerabilities to our ecological connectivity while also pointing to opportunities: proactive conservation or thoughtful development can preserve connectivity before it is lost.

A key strength of the EcoCon is its adaptability. While tailored to Florida’s unique landscape and data, its underlying framework is broadly transferable. Many regions face similar pressures, including population growth, habitat fragmentation, and competing land-use demands. The EcoCon provides a template for how to bring diverse datasets together into a cohesive tool that supports connectivity conservation at scale.

The EcoCon is designed for practical, real-world applications. Regional planners can use it to inform zoning and infrastructure decisions, conservation organizations can prioritize land acquisition and easements, and policymakers can better evaluate trade-offs between development and environmental protection. By presenting complex ecological dynamics in a clear visual format, the tool helps bridge the gap between scientific research and actionable decision-making.
