The 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species will take place from 12-17 February 2024 in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) under the motto “Nature Knows No Borders”.
Meeting every three years since 1985, the CoP is the principal decision-making body of the 133 country Parties to consider the endangered status and management of specific species, examine country reporting, set priorities, and adopt a budget for implementing the overall aims of the convention to conserve migratory species and their habitat.
CoP-14 builds on momentum since adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in 2022 and will address ecological connectivity in a number of ways. In preparation, the CMS Secretariat has circulated documents, including:
- A report on connectivity-related policy aspects and annexed draft consolidated resolution and decisions on “Ecological Connectivity”. With this background and proposed language, Parties are to redouble commitments with an emphasis on countries and partners identifying, strengthening, and expanding the ecological network approach to conserve migratory species worldwide;
- A corresponding report on technical aspects of ecological connectivity, including much of the Scientific Council’s work since 2021 and next steps to be pursued with the Working Group on Ecological Connectivity such as promoting related objectives and indicators of the GBF, enhancing data coordination and application, addressing linkages between migratory species connectivity, ecosystem resilience, and climate change;
- A report regarding infrastructure development that includes proposed amendments of a resolution and related decisions on “Impact assessment and migratory species” reflecting best-practice recommendations from the Intersessional Working Group on Linear Infrastructure and Migratory Species directed to Parties, the Scientific Council, and Secretariat; and
- A proposed “Strategic Plan for Migratory Species 2024-2032” with Goal 2 focused on “The habitats and ranges of migratory species are maintained and restored, supporting their connectivity.”
