IUCN Guidelines for conserving connectivity

In 2020, the CCSG published IUCN Guidelines for conserving connectivity through ecological networks and corridors. Since then, the Guidelines have been translated into French, Spanish, Mongolian, Korean, and Chinese.

WCPA Technical Report ‘Addressing ecological connectivity in the development of roads, railways and canals’

In 2023, the Transport Working Group (TWG) published ‘Addressing ecological connectivity in the development of roads, railways and canals’. It provides an overview of practical, feasible, science-based strategies for protected and conserved area (PCA) managers, transport practitioners, industry, conservationists, and other interested stakeholders to confront the impacts of infrastructure on the environment. From planning and design to construction, operations, and monitoring, this report – the fifth volume in the IUCN WCPA Technical Report Series – synthesizes the state of the field and offers a way forward.

Rules of Thumb for MPA and MPA Network Design

In 2021, the Marine Connectivity Working Group (MCWG) published Marine Connectivity Conservation Rules of Thumb for MPA and MPA Network Design. Meant to inform dialogue and action for better conserving marine areas and species around the world, the publication, accompanied by 15 case studies covering 31 countries, is the result of collaboration among experts around the world and provides guidance for integrating connectivity into the planning and management of marine protected areas (MPAs).

Protecting Asian Elephants from Linear Transport Infrastructure

In 2021, the Asian Elephant Transport Working Group published Protecting Asian Elephants from Linear Transport Infrastructure: The Asian Elephant Transport Working Group’s Introduction to the Challenges and Solutions. The result of collaboration among infrastructure ecologists and elephant biologists, contents include:

• Information about the projected expansion of linear transport infrastructure (LTI) in range countries;
• The research and evidence of impacts that such growth is having on Asian elephants;
• A focus on guidelines, policies, laws, practices, and emerging technologies for reducing Asian-elephant transport conflicts;
• Seven wildlife crossing case studies covering Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, and Malaysia; and
• Recommendations for advancing efforts, policies, and research.

Handbook to Mitigate the Impacts of Roads and Railways on Asian Elephants

Published in 2024 by the Asian Elephant Transport Working Group, this handbook provides recommendations and design criteria for Asian elephant-specific crossing structures, additional mitigation measures, and guidance for data-driven determination of locations for such mitigations to address LTI impacts to elephants. The handbook benefits from the growing experience with elephant mitigation applications in Asia that have accelerated in the past decade. The handbook’s recommendations and guidelines thus reflect current best practices, recognizing that they are continuously evolving, driven by technological advancements and lessons learned from post-construction monitoring.
