Solidarity with Nepal and China after the devastating floods

On behalf of the Mountain Working Group, under the Connectivity Conservation Specialist Group of the IUCN World Commission for Protected Areas (WCPA), we extend our deepest sympathies and unwavering support to the people of Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region as they grapple with the devastating impacts of the floods of August 26, 2026. The loss of life, displacement of communities, and destruction of infrastructure and natural habitats are heartbreaking reminders of the growing urgency to address climate resilience in high mountain areas.

Mountains on the border between Nepal and China are not only a global biodiversity hotspot but also a lifeline for millions of people downstream. The floods have underscored the vulnerability of these ecosystems and the communities depending on them. As a group dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of mountain environments, we stand in solidarity with both countries and reaffirm our commitment to supporting efforts that mitigate such disasters and build long-term resilience.

We recognize the particular vulnerability of high mountain areas to climate change, which further underscores the importance of transboundary monitoring, governance and cooperation, including the development and strengthening of protected area systems. These areas play a critical role buffering the impacts of climate change and providing refuge for both wildlife and human communities.

In this time of crisis, the Mountain Working Group and the global mountain community stands with Nepal and China and call on the global conservation community to mobilize resources to support immediate relief and recovery efforts but also to advocate for climate-adaptive strategies prioritizing the unique challenges of mountain regions.
