Six AsETWG Steering Committee members attended the 11th Asian Elephant Specialist Group meeting in India from March 14-17. Meetings took place in Delhi, as well as Corbett National Park. The AsESG is a global network of specialists concerned with the study, monitoring, management, and conservation of Asian elephants in its 13 range states and is part of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the IUCN. The AsETWG is co-hosted by the Specialist Group and the CCSG.

During the meeting, AsETWG Co-Chairs Sandeep Tiwari and Rob Ament presented a draft for peer review of the group’s forthcoming “Handbook on mitigation measures for roads and railways to safeguard Asian elephants”. Contents include:

  • Wildlife crossing structure types and applications
  • Best practice design criteria for effective elephant crossing structures
  • Elephant crossing structure site selection methodologies
  • Role of fencing in promoting effective elephant crossing structures
  • Mitigations appropriate for low-traffic and low-speed roads
  • New and emerging technologies

The meeting was an excellent opportunity to raise awareness for the upcoming handbook and continue to strengthen the conservation community focused on protecting this endangered keystone species.
