Finding ways to increase connectivity and decrease conflict

Fahimeh Baziari2024-02-22T11:28:52-05:00February 22nd, 2023|Corridors Science, Digests|

An increase in connectivity for wildlife populations often leads to conflict with humans, but a new framework illustrated with Asian elephants provides a way to balance out opposing needs.

Mapping local and regional connectivity across North America

Fahimeh Baziari2024-02-22T11:29:31-05:00January 25th, 2023|Corridors Science, Digests|

New maps of continent-wide connectivity reflect how species respond to human modification at multiple scales and highlight the value of small, protected fragments.

Dynamic conservation reserves made of fallowed cropland

Farm fields that are temporarily or semi-permanently fallow due to drought may improve landscapes connectivity by lowering agricultural intensity.

Shifting boreal forests under climate change

Fahimeh Baziari2024-02-22T15:41:15-05:00November 17th, 2022|Climate Change, Digests|

Small changes in temperature and rainfall are likely to inhibit regeneration of southern boreal tree species, with only slow replacement by temperate species.

Balancing wind energy and migratory corridors for birds

Data from whooping cranes show they tend to avoid stopover sites in association with wind turbine infrastructure, but site optimization at a multi-state scale could better balance energy and conservation goals.

An integrated climate-biodiversity framework for connectivity planning and policy

Fahimeh Baziari2024-02-22T15:42:44-05:00September 20th, 2022|Climate Change, Digests|

Climate change and biodiversity loss are complex issues, and understanding the links between planning and policy outcomes can optimize reciprocal benefits and reduce unintended trade-offs.

Powerlines as corridors that support biodiversity in suburban landscapes

Fahimeh Baziari2022-08-11T16:44:13-04:00August 11th, 2022|Corridors in Management, Digests|

Although powerline easements are often heavily maintained with mowing and herbicide, they can potentially help increase biodiversity in urban and suburban areas if managed for wildlife.

Species vulnerable to climate change in the Appalachian forest corridor

Fahimeh Baziari2024-02-22T11:34:28-05:00July 19th, 2022|Climate Change, Digests|

A broad study of over 250 species in the Appalachian forest ecoregion of the eastern U.S. shows how birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians will fare differently under future climate scenarios.

Using dark infrastructure to combat artificial light at night

Fahimeh Baziari2024-02-23T10:16:53-05:00June 23rd, 2022|Corridors Science, Digests|

Incorporating darkened corridors and other pathways into urban areas can help support nocturnal species whose movement is seriously impeded by nighttime light.

Protecting wetland connectivity along migratory flyways

Waterbirds that travel seasonally between Europe and Africa use protected wetlands along the way, but unprotected wetlands also contribute significantly to flyway connectivity.

Using population synchrony to quantify functional connectivity

Fahimeh Baziari2024-02-22T11:36:58-05:00April 25th, 2022|Corridors Science, Digests|

Decades of bird and butterfly surveys across the UK support a new technique for providing a "species-eye-view" of functional connectivity.
